Thermal Phosphoric Acid
Phosphoric acid, also known as orthophosphoric acid, is a mineral acid with the chemical formula H3PO4. Pure, anhydrous phosphoric acid is a white solid which melts at 42 degrees Celsius to form a viscous liquid. Commonly used phosphoric acid is an aqueous solution of 75-85% H3PO4 which is generally produced by two different processes: wet process and thermal process.

Thermal process phosphoric acid is obtained by burning elemental phosphorus (P4) to produce phosphorus pent-oxide (P2O5) which is further dissolved in dilute phosphoric acid to make 75% or 85% product. This process produces a highly pure acid by removing most of the impurities present in the phosphate rock in an electric furnace where phosphorus (P) is released as a vapor. The arsenic (As) impurity can be further precipitated from phosphoric acid and reduced to less than 1 ppm.

There is need for thermal phosphoric acid in the U.S. market as a food and beverage additive, for water treatment, in metal finishing chemicals, and other areas. As a result, Fang Chemicals has established a domestic liquid bulk terminal (2,000 MT 85% phosphoric acid) to bring thermal phosphoric acid 85% from China as well as the ability to offer it at 75% or any lower concentration.
